We already talked about what not to put on your skin so you are probably wondering some things that can be beneficial to use on your skin.  There is probably not one product that will work for everyone so look for products with similar, and proven, ingredients.  Vitamin E is an example of a proven ingredient designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Look for a wrinkle remover that has retinoids such as Retin A.  This is one of the only FDA approved ingredients that can help to reduce wrinkles.

Types of Wrinkle Removers

There are many different types of wrinkle removers. Some of them are available through prescription only or must be administered in a doctor’s office. Other wrinkle removers are available over the counter. Usually, prescription wrinkle removers are more powerful and more effective than non prescription products but recently there have been several products that have been developed that can actually be just as effective as prescription products.

Once you determine whether you are looking for a prescription or a non prescription wrinkle remover you can evaluate your own wrinkles. If you see a doctor for a consultation for a prescription wrinkle remover then he will evaluate your skin for you to determine what will be the most effective product. If you are looking for a non prescription product then you should look to see what it has been shown to do. If you have deep wrinkles you don’t want a product that is only effective on the surface of your skin. Instead, find a wrinkle remover that is designed for deep wrinkles and has been shown in several studies to be effective. If you are looking to prevent the onset of wrinkles then you can find a product that is effective for surface wrinkles. Some facials can even help prevent surface wrinkles.

There are topical treatments that reduce wrinkles as well as medical and spa treatments. Topical treatments are easy to use and can be used at home which makes them convenient. One down side to non prescription topical treatments is that they are sometimes not as effective. Even if they contain proven ingredients they may not be contained in adequate amounts so you may not see too many improvements in your wrinkles. If you do see some improvements they may not last very long so you will need to use the cream for a longer time than you would need a prescription cream. That being said, however, there are certainly effective non prescription creams on the market.

Ingredients

The ingredients that are included in wrinkle removers vary and may not always be effective.  Several ingredients have been approved by the FDA for use in wrinkle creams.  If you can find a wrinkle cream with an FDA approved ingredient included you probably have a higher chance of seeing success.  Also look for ingredients that have been proven to be effective in several studies. The following ingredients have been proven through several studies to be effective in wrinkle removers.

• Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)- AHAs are natural fruit acids.  They work to remove the top layer of skin thus reducing surface wrinkles and fine lines.  A lot of products that are designed to prevent crows feet contain AHAs because of their effectiveness.  Some studies are also indicating that when AHAs are used in higher concentrations they can actually stimulate the production of collagen.
• Retinoids- Retin A is probably one of the most commonly known retinoids.  It is an FDA approved ingredient for the reduction of fine lines and large wrinkles.  It can also work to repair sun damage.  New products such as retinol are being included in over the counter and non prescription wrinkle creams and have been shown to be just as effective.  An added bonus of the natural retinol is that it has fewer side effects and will not cause as much sensitivity.
• Vitamin C- When used topically Vitamin C can increase collagen production and decrease the damage from UVA and UVB rays.  Surprisingly, it can also correct pigmentation problems such as sun spots.
• Idebenone- This is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown in many studies to increase skin hydration and decrease wrinkles.
• Growth Factors- These are naturally produced by the body.  But when applied topically you can see greater results such as decreased wrinkles and sun damage and increased collagen production.
• Pentapeptides- Sun damaged skin has a harder time producing collagen.  When pentapeptides were used topically even sun damaged skin was better able to produce collagen.

When you look for a wrinkle remover try to find one that contains a few of these ingredients so that you can be better assured that it will work.  But also keep in mind that most wrinkle creams will be at least somewhat effective simply by hydrating your skin.  You may notice when you start using a wrinkle cream that your skin is more sensitive and may burn.  Don’t worry, though, most of this goes away within just a little bit of time so you will have all the benefits without the side effects.
